While
I know many of you will separate the blogging and youtube world, I have
recently questioned the integrity of my fellow bloggers too. A
post that got me thinking about this trust within the blogging world was this one which
discussed the hype sounding a new eyeliner which seemed to be every bloggers 'must have'. As an outsider it seemed to me that, before the eyeliner in question
was released and only in the hands of people who had been sent the product,
everyone seemed to love it. It was only when it went to general release and
people spent their own money on it that the cracks began to show. As Hayley pointed out
in her post I understand that many want to please, but there comes a point in
your blogging life were you need to know where you loyalties lie. As a blogger
you won’t like every product which pops through your post box, and have to
choose between benefiting the brand or your readers. Readers who put their trust in you.
I know that it is sometimes hard to give a negative review on a brand you
love, especially if that brand has taken the time to send you their latest
product launch. But in such cases, lying, or exaggerating the truth to please a
brand shouldn't be the answer. It just makes me lose faith in certain members of community altogether. At this point I feel its important to point out that I do not distrust every positive review on this particular
eyeliner, and a can guarantee there will be some bloggers who genuinely loved
it. There is however a huge gap in terms of percentage between the general
public and bloggers which sadly makes me question these reviews.
Although the misleading reviews don't end with bloggers trying to please brands, and recently I noticed on twitter that another trust issue many had was bloggers not disclosing samples. Again, I have no
problem with PR samples, In fact I myself feature them. Like many I just wish there was a little more honesty surrounding them, don’t understand
why some people have such an issue with disclaiming items which were gifted
to them. I myself am more likely to trust a blogger who has disclaimed that
they have received an item for review, than one who hasn't mentioned it at all. Of course with this issue its hard to point the finger at individual bloggers, because you don't know what they've brought with their own money. Although I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen products which haven’t
even hit the shelves yet reviewed on blogs undisclosed. I will point out that in certain countries there is no law on blogger disclosure but personally I, like the majority of bloggers, choose
to maintain honesty with my readers and am more trusting of other bloggers who act in the same way.
All
of these points leads me to the question, Do you still trust bloggers? Despite this post, for the most part I do. I think if I didn't, I wouldn't still be here after three years. I know most of these facts apply to a extremely small percentage of bloggers. I have however learned to be wary and toughly research
before parting with my money! I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s easy
to get carried away in the blogging world, but as a blogger it’s important to
remember that there are real life people behind each and every view which look
you as an honest source of information. Not a brands advertisement, potentially
wasting their hard earned money on a crappy product you recommended. I'm sorry if you found this post a little negative, I just really wanted to get my thoughts on the issue out there and hear what you guys have to say on the matter.
I was so put off by that video too.
ReplyDeleteApparently a lot of bloggers are sent Sephora gift-cards so when they say they brought the products they technically weren't lying but still a bit dodgy :/
I'm definitely going to be careful and not rush out to by a product that I've seen raved about
xx
I think what upset me most about the video was that many of the girls shown in the it are people I actually subscribe to. To be quite honest I just didn't expect it from them!
DeleteAnd I've heard about the gift card thing too, if that is the case, it is so cleverly done! Personally I think even if they gave them a gift card to spend, they should be disclaiming were it's come from. Misleading viewers into thinking they've parted with their own money is very sly! Xx
Fantastic post, Summer! I'm really finding it hard to trust the "bigger bloggers" at the moment - so many of them feature the same products, like clones, and have barely used any of the product in their "favourites" videos. I don't have a problem with pr samples in general, like yourself I have received some, but it's when everyone starts to sound the same and refuses to disclose, that makes me doubt the validity of their reviews. In short, I trust smaller bloggers more these days.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your comment lovely! I'm happy to see I'm not alone in questioning bloggers! To be honest, things just get a little boring when everyone's reviewing the same product and saying that it's great (is it just me that loves a negative review? Haha). I will however defend them slightly in saying that most bloggers probably get the original press release around the same time so are possibly unaware things are about to get repetitive.
DeleteThere's nothing worse than an untouched looking product in a favourites video! Favourites are meant to contain things you have really been reaching for throughout the month, and is the post I'm most likely to take note of! I guess this is another reason I was so shocked by the allegation that those favourites videos were sponsored.
To be honest I agree with the smaller blogger comment to an extent, however there are still a few bigger ones who say the good and bad in every product that I put a lot of trust in! But sadly, one review isn't enough to sway me anymore and as I mentioned I have to do my research before committing!
Sorry for such a long reply, you just had so much I wanted to build on! Xx
I'm highly skeptical of popular bloggers, so if they sing a products praises I will check reviews by less known bloggers who are more likely to have paid for their products as they are more likely to be honest about the products faults. As many popular bloggers also push very expensive products as being the best thing since sliced bread.
ReplyDeleteI know one week essiebutton and amelialiana both has 2 or 3 items exactly the same in their monthly favourites even down to a shade. I know they're friends but still, it makes me wonder if that product has been sent to them since I know essiebutton doesn't disclose. sorry to name and shame but this is the one thing about the blogging community that I really hate.
Regardless of how many good reviews a product gets, I'm always in search for a bad one just so I can really consider the good and bad points of a product before I part with my money!
DeleteI agree with your point about expensive products, that's what actually pushed me to start this blog when I was 16, as I was really struggling to find one that didnt feature a different £30+ product daily! I think sometimes bloggers who haven't paid for a product are more forgiving of the price tag. xx
Also about the liner in question, I was really happy that after seeing missbudgetbeauty instagram about the release event she went too where her and a friend were given the liner to try out, that she later reviewed and it said that it wasn't that great and would recommend a gel liner in a pot above that one.
ReplyDeleteI really like missbudgetbeauty, and wish I would have discovered her before I started this blog, because as I mentioned in my previous comment I was struggling to find a blog in my price range! Good on her for being honest :) xx
DeleteIt's completely about your own integrity, i could not right posts where i am literally lieing, if i like something i will say so and if i don't the same. That's how it should be and everyone should disclose. xx
ReplyDeleteI agree lovely, Personally I will always choose my integrity over pleasing brands! Your readers trust you enough to follow your blog in the first place, I see no reason to lie to them. I wish it was like that in every case! xx
DeleteI wrote a similar post to this a few weeks ago about censorship on blogger. I definitely feel as though some people are untruthful in their blog posts, however, it's just knowing how to separate the truthful ones from the ones who pepper their posts with little white lies which, unfortunately, is very difficult. I also feel as though not only are we untruthful in our posts but in our comments, people shy away from being critical about make up or a certain outfit which I don't think is the point of fashion or beauty as there is always controversy in these fields which makes them so wonderful and diverse. I definitely 100% agree with this post, we definitely need more of the truth on Blogger.

I just found your post and loved it. You raise such an interesting point about untruthful comments! Personally I think truthful comments are so important to bloggers, in fact constructive criticism has definitely helped shape my blog into something I am proud of today.
DeleteI also agree with this in terms of commenting on the product featured within another bloggers post, why do we feel so inclined to comment something positive about the product? Surely pointing out a potential flaw would be more useful! xx
This was such an interesting read! As a blogger I think it can be easy to tell when a fellow blogger has been gifted an item but hasn't disclosed as they tend to explain a lot of the background of the company ect! Also I would say some of the 'bigger bloggers' can be a little guilty of just 'going through the motions' when it comes to reviewing sample products, which is obviously a great shame! I'd like to think my integrity to my readers is worth a lot more than any amount of money or samples :)

Thanks lovely, and I think I agree, its a massive shame. I like to believe that my readers will always come first too, after all, I write for their sake, not for a brands! :) xx
DeleteThanks for posting this. I have noticed this as well and it really gets to me, sometimes its so obvious it turns me off their blog. Wish all bloggers could be more honest about products since that's what their followers want not what the company behind the product thinks. ☺
ReplyDeleteNo problem lovely, and I agree, I think we all just want a little more honesty ! xx
DeleteI try to wait for products to go on general release and keep an eye on reviews then, but I do have a few bloggers/vloggers I trust. MammafulZo on youtube for example, since she'll often even give bad reviews of big blogger favourites. But there are bloggers I give a definite side eye to on their reviews, especially ones where for a few months their monthly favourites have all been samples sent for review. Maybe it's just coincidence, but a few months on the trot of it makes me question things.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm just a skeptic!
I like to wait too, unless its a product I really want to try! I'll have to look her up, I really enjoy negative reviews xx
